News Release-Search and Rescue Operations Underway for Missing Person Following Flash Flood at Havasu Creek

GRAND CANYON, AZ.- Grand Canyon National Park is actively engaged in search and rescue operations following a flash flood that struck Havasu Creek on August 22, 2024.
The flash flood, which occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m., led to several hikers being stranded in the affected area. Rescue efforts began promptly, with an initial flight taking off before 3 p.m. to assist individuals stranded both below and above Beaver Falls.
Currently, there is one individual, Chenoa Nickerson, who is believed to be missing. Nickerson, a 33-year-old female from Gilbert, Arizona, was swept into Havasu Creek approximately 0.5 miles above the Colorado River confluence and was not wearing a life jacket. Nickerson is described as 5’8”, 190 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
