Prop 206 - The Fair Wages and Healthy Families Act

I think most of you are ready for the visitors but are you ready for the changes July 1st from Prop 206?  Beginning July 1st Prop 206 will require you to provide sick time for all of your employees.

Here are the basics:

Those with 15 or more employees must provide 40 hours of paid time off annually.

Those with fewer than 15 employees must provide a minimum of 24 hours paid time off annually.

This law covers all workers weather they are full time, part-time, seasonal, or temporary.

You can provide the time based on an accrual basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.  Time begins to accrue their first day of hire(or July 1, 2017) and continues up to 24/40 hours depending on the size of your workforce.  If you already have a sick time policy that provides greater benefit you can still use that provided there is no waiting period.

Employees do not need to prove they're sick to take time off.

Time can be used for physical or mental illnesses, or ongoing treatment, preventative treatment (dentist, annuals etc).  Time can also be used if family members need care and they are accompanying them.

Time can also be used for domestic violence, sexual abuse and stalking, meeting with an attorney, arranging shelter services or safe house.

Sick pay time can be requested in the lowest hourly increment you pay.  For example if you pay by the quarter hour an employee can request 15 minutes of sick pay if they are late/delayed returning to work for one of the reasons required by the law.  Remember you can not ask why - if they request sick pay and have not exceeded their 24/40 hours for the year no discipline for taking the time and requesting pay.  The only exception is if it has been three straight days of absence in a row, only then can you require proof of illness or documentation related to one of the covered causes listed.

You are required to keep records of accrued time off for each worker and post notices of the new law in prominent places such as breakrooms.

For additional information and specific questions please visit the Industrial Commission of Arizona's website.

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce hosted a question and answer live on Facebook that was very informative if you are interested in hearing an attorneys perspective.

National Park Service News

National Park Service CUA program

The National Park Service is considering potential updates to its commercial use authorization (CUA) program. CUAs are permits that tour operators and certain other visitor service providers must procure in order to operate in a national park. In the next two months, NPS expects to post an overview of potential updates and allow for public comment through the online Planning, Environment, and Public Comment System. Check that website for updates and, once the proposed updates are posted, the opportunity to comment. ~ Donald Leadbetter National Tourism Program Manager National Park Service Note their website is currently down but expected back up June 5th.

The National Park Service is already planning the Grand Canyon's 100th Birthday Celebration and they want your feedback on how to make it a Grand Celebration.  Please complete a brief survey  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CK2FML5  to share your ideas.
