This Month’s Update From Tusayan Mayor Clarinda Vail

January 29, 2021

I hope the holiday season provided some needed relief and that 2021 has hopes of being better in every way for all of you. Here is a quick update on what I have been working on this past month. My main goal as Mayor of Tusayan is to create a government that works for “YOU not the few.” I want and welcome your questions and requests about the things I can do for you!

*Thank you to all those who are liking my Facebook page. It is and will be a great source of updates moving forward. If you have not already visited my page, please visit www.facebook.com/TusayanMayor and check it out.

*A special and heartfelt thanks to our town and maintenance staff for all of their hard work to make our town look great and feel like the holidays. The Tusayan Holiday Lights and Santa Shack helped our town have something special for the holidays. I have noticed other diligent work on improvements that we all can see and benefit from. Some include the recent vegetation work done in the AZ Right-of-Way and prompt snow removal this past week. THANK YOU!

*I am looking forward to the upcoming Tusayan Town Council Retreat that will be taking place next week on February 5th and 6th. Due to the COVID-19 concerns, we will not be hosting this retreat out-of-town, but have decided to move forward with an in-house/virtual retreat to exchange ideas and strategies for this coming year. The retreat will be available to the public from Tusayan Town Hall via Zoom. I am grateful for the hard work of the current town council and look forward to creating ways to improve Tusayan’s quality of life with them.
Among the topics I will be bringing up is one key idea I have had: returning excess town revenues in lump-sum payments to you (potentially up to $6,000 per person) and then possible annual payments of up to $3,000 per person. I am one of 5 votes on the Town Council so it will be important to see where my colleagues stand. I feel very strongly about this concept especially during this time when so many need more help. I will keep you posted on what happens and please contact me before Feb. 5 if you have any comments or suggestions for the retreat.
*As many of you are aware, COVID-19 cases have continued to climb in our community. We now have had a total of 147 cases within the zip code 86023. It is so important for all of us to stay vigilant against the virus. We are in the 4th Quarter of a very long, and hard-fought game, with this virus. We need to keep playing hard to finish the last quarter strong while we await the opportunity for everyone to receive the vaccine.

*On Thursday, February 4th, COVID-19 testing will be available at the IMAX back parking lot from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Saliva and Nasal Swab testing will be available.

*I recently completed a three-day training with the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, that seeks to provide professional and high-quality assistance to the municipal government, that was both informative and valuable. I look forward to utilizing these skills and tools that I learned to better serve our residents.

*I would encourage Tusayan residents to attend our town council meetings especially now that they are accessible online. I will work hard to make sure that they continue to be online and interactive after the current COVID crisis is over.

There is a lot of great work to be done. Thank you!
