Update From Tusayan Mayor Clarinda Vail

April 7, 2021

A Mayor For YOU Not The Few!

Here is an update on what I have been working on this past month. As always, I want and welcome your questions and requests about the things I can do for you!

*The East Rim Gate WILL OPEN April 8th!

I am thrilled that The Grand Canyon National Park is opening the East Rim Gate and that past travel patterns can resume. This gives our guests more options for their travel plans on where to enter or exit The Grand Canyon National Park South Rim.

THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE HELPED MAKE THAT HAPPEN!

*The town is addressing the long lines at the entrance gate. In 2019 The Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, Grand Canyon National Park, Town of Tusayan, Paul Revere Transportation and Kaibab National Forest, released the South Rim - Tusayan Multimodal Transportation Action Plan to help address the long lines at the entrance gate. I would like the community to know this plan, and the issues surrounding it, are on the front burner for the council and that meetings are happening, and the issue will be on the town council's agenda on April 14.

*The Town of Tusayan recently selected Loven Contracting Inc. to construct the Ramada/Outdoor Classroom at the Tusayan Sports Complex. I am thrilled to see this project moving forward after so many years of planning I look forward to seeing other projects start at the sports complex very soon.

*Last Thursday Governor Doug Ducey issued an executive order that removes local control over mask mandates and large gatherings. The Town of Tusayan has not rescinded the current face-covering proclamation at this time and though it is still in place, it cannot be enforced. As I would hope to not see another spike in cases in Tusayan, I encourage people to continue to wear face coverings and physically distance and would like to remind businesses that they are allowed to require customers to wear masks to enter their establishments if they so choose.

*The Tusayan Sanitary District has paid for and installed four sample solar pedestrian walking lights. There are two along RP Drive and two on S. Long Jim Loop. These are samples for all parties to see if they would provide the proper pedestrian lighting for increased safety along these roads. Please take a look at the samples and provide feedback to me if you have any.

*This month’s COVID-19 vaccine update – Coconino County and the State of Arizona are opening vaccinations to all persons 16 years of age and up. Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines are only available for adults 18 and up. Pfizer vaccines are available to individuals 16 and up. There are vaccine appointments available at various locations throughout the county.

*As of last week there have been 1,327 vaccine doses administered at the Grand Canyon Clinic. The clinic anticipates administering 240-second doses next week. They have made changes to their website to allow the general public not previously in a priority category to make an appointment.

Once you have registered, the clinic will call you to schedule your vaccination. Should you receive a call from 928-522-9400, this is the clinic calling to schedule your appointment.

*Join me and please get the vaccine when it is available to you in order to protect yourself, your family and loved ones, and our community.

*Thank you to all those who are liking my Facebook page. It is and will be a great source of community updates moving forward. If you have not already visited my page, please visit Facebook.com/TusayanMayor and check it out. And REMEMBER to encourage your friends and neighbors to follow and like my social media.

* I would encourage Tusayan residents to attend our town council meetings especially now that they are accessible online. I will work hard to make sure that they continue to be online and interactive after the current COVID crisis is over.

*Never hesitate to contact me – about anything – at:

I am here to serve you!

There is a lot of great work to be done. We will keep improving Tusayan together! Thank you.
