Update: Prop 400 Budget Override Is Rejected

May 29, 2019

Prop 400, a ballot item that allows Tusayan to exceed state spending limits, has been defeated with 34 voting no and 32 voting yes.

On May 29th, The Town Council approved a canvas of the votes cast.

Normally Prop 400 would not be needed. Towns usually get permission to exceed limits by passing a "Home Rule Option." In November Tusayan failed to follow the state requirements  for the Home Rule election and the results were invalidated. For more information on the invalidation click here.

The vote in November was 73 yes and 64 no.

Without state spending limits Tusayan could have spent as much as $18 million for the fiscal year that starts July. Without Home Rule or a budget override that limit is less than $2 million.
