Tusayan Works With Coconino County To Update Flood Control Issues
September 2, 2024
A Valuable lesson learned from last year’s flood is the need to update Tusayan’s floodplain to reflect the risk. Assistant County Manager Lucinda Andreani recently met with Tusayan’s Town Council. She said the Coconino County Flood Control District is committed to providing Tusayan with project management assistance as well as help with getting grants to develop a master drainage plan.
The county updated some of its modeling based on last year’s flood. It found that flows of up to 10 thousand cubic feet per second can be expected for a 100-year flood in the Coconino County Wash.
Both the County and the Town are working on an intergovernmental agreement.
Once the drainage master plain is 80% complete, the Coconino County Flood Control District will work with Tusayan to help secure grant funding.
This level of cooperation is in stark contrast to Tusayan’s prior administration’s efforts to separate itself from the county’s expertise several years ago. Cooperation resumed following the election of Mayor Vail and the new Town Council.
Mayor Vail told Andreani, “I am glad we have such a great relationship with the County. Having your expertise is so valuable to the process.”
