Grand Canyon Airport News Release: Full Airport Closure Begins July 14 for Runway Rehabilition Project
July 12, 2025
We are making great progress preparing for Grand Canyon National Park Airport’s upcoming runway rehabilitation project. Nighttime closures have gone smoothly, and crews have been hard at work prepping for the project, with the asphalt test strip completed this week.
What’s Next:
The airport’s only runway (3/21) will close to all fixed-wing aircraft operations from Sunday, July 14 through Saturday, Aug. 10, 2025. Helicopter operations may continue to operate from the ramp.
This is a full airport closure -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week -- for the duration of the anticipated 28-day project. The runway is scheduled to reopen on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025.
What the Project Includes:
· A full-width 3-inch mill and asphalt overlay to address distressed pavement
· Reconfiguration and rehabilitation of taxiway intersections P, A, and B to correct an FAA-identified hotspot
· Updated taxiway naming and signage to align with current FAA standards
· Painting updates to the aircraft parking apron, including the green no-taxi island
This project will not change the runway’s current length or width. It is focused solely on improving safety and extending the life of the existing infrastructure.
We appreciate your continued support and patience during this important improvement effort.
