Grand Canyon National Park Airport completes runway upgrade

September 30, 2025

TUSAYAN – Grand Canyon National Park Airport, operated by the Arizona Department of Transportation, has completed a $12 million runway rehabilitation that enhances safety and improves operational efficiency.

The project resurfaced the airport’s sole runway, reconfigured a key taxiway intersection, refreshed apron markings and updated signage to meet current Federal Aviation Administration standards. Work was completed in just over two months, with careful coordination to minimize impacts on airport operations, tenants and travelers.

“This project reflects the strength of our partnership with the FAA and our shared commitment to
safe, efficient access to the Grand Canyon,” said David Reffner, Director of Grand Canyon National Park Airport. “We are proud to have delivered this project on time thanks to the dedication and expertise of our project team.”

Funded primarily by an FAA Airport Improvement Program grant with matching funds from the
state, the project demonstrates Arizona’s commitment to maintaining premier aviation infrastructure that enhances the experience for travelers.

The project team included Fann Contracting for construction, Mead & Hunt for design and project management, and ADOT and FAA staff.

In just over two months, and right on schedule, project crews:
• gave the 8,999-foot runway a fresh three-inch mill and overlay,

• reconfigured the taxiway intersection at the end of Runway 21 to eliminate an FAA-identified hot spot and improve aircraft flow,

• updated signage and designations to meet FAA standards, and

• enhanced the aircraft parking apron, including painting a new green no-taxi zone.

The work was funded through an FAA Airport Improvement Program grant, with support from state funds, and delivered with the expertise of Mead & Hunt and Fann Construction.

Thanks to these upgrades, the runway now offers enhanced safety, improved efficiency, and greater reliability -- helping us continue to support the tourism that drives northern Arizona’s economy. We appreciate your patience while we made it happen!

Final Touches Ahead: Crews will return the week of October 6 to complete pavement marking touch-ups on Taxiway A, including the holding position markings. This work will be performed under escort, and a work-in-progress NOTAM will be issued.
