News Release: Tusayan Drainage Master Plan Update on Grant and Funding Opportunities

July 17, 2026

The Tusayan Drainage Master Plan Engineering Team (Project Team) continues working on design plans for in-town mitigation, as well as on-forest drainage improvements. The Town of Tusayan did not receive the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant that was applied for in Spring 2026. BUILD is a highly competitive grant, and the Project Team is seeking feedback so we are well-positioned to apply again for this or other transportation grants.
The Project Team continues to pursue grant opportunities at both a State and Federal level. Recently, a delegation from the Town of Tusayan, including Mayor Vail, Councilman Brush, and City Manager Clifton, traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with several agencies and the Arizona Congressional Delegation to discuss the need for grants to support this critical public safety project and the importance of maintaining access to the Grand Canyon National Park.

Another important meeting will be taking place with the U.S. Department of Agriculture State Director for Rural Development in August to again discuss grant opportunities. These meetings will further assist the Town of Tusayan and the Project Team in applying for future funding opportunities to construct these important flood control measures for the Tusayan Community and for maintaining access to the Grand Canyon National Park.
