Sierra Club Opposes Tusayan Airport Expansion
May 8, 2014
The Arizona Department of Transportation is expected to get an earful Friday morning when it reviews plans for an airport expansion in Tusayan. The ADOT hearing is on May 9 at 9am at the the City of Flagstaff Council Chambers, 211 W. Aspen Avenue, in Flagstaff. Online comments are due May 20 to https://www.research.net/s/fiveyearprogram.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) wants to spend $1.6 million of state funds and $18.6 million of federal funds to sink a new well, add lighting, upgrade runways and the existing terminal, and build a new terminal at Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan.
The Sierra Club's Alicyn Gitlin says, "The proposed airport modifications will mean more threats to Grand Canyon’s seeps and springs, more light impeding the park’s dark skies, and more noise in Grand Canyon from larger jets. ADOT should focus on spending money in ways that will benefit all of us, not on projects that will harm Grand Canyon National Park."
